The inspiration for this Kyūsu teapot was a beautiful piece of raw Holocene wood that I found myself. Wood that is over 6,000 years old, with overgrown knots, a deep dark color, and distinctive grooves that have been formed over centuries.
This wood itself was then sensitively worked and incorporated into the body of the teapot, so that it not only retained its overall character, but also so that every stroke of the carving tool that I created into it stood out.
In creating the body of the teapot, I placed emphasis on creating an obvious synergy of two materials, ceramic and Holocene wood. The interaction of these two components creates a unique, distinctive element with reference to Japanese aesthetics, to Wabi Sabi.
